Introduction: Sleep quality is an important indicator for maintaining physical and mental health, especially among medical students who experience high academic demands and significant levels of stress. Physical fitness plays a role in maintaining physiological functions of the body, including the regulation of hormones and the nervous system, which influence sleep quality. However, the relationship between physical fitness and sleep quality among medical students in Indonesia has not been widely explored in depth.

Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between physical fitness and sleep quality among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, class of 2024.

Methods: This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study involved 80 active undergraduate medical students from the 2024 cohort of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, selected using simple random sampling. Physical fitness was measured using the bleep test, while sleep quality data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, consisting of 19 items. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the Chi-square test to assess the relationship between variables.
Results: Research findings indicate that 40 respondents (50%) had good sleep quality and 40 respondents (50%) had poor sleep quality. Based on the level of physical fitness, 41 respondents (51.25%) were categorized as low, 30 respondents (37.5%) as moderate, and 9 respondents (11.25%) as high. Based on the results, the majority of respondents with poor sleep quality showed low physical fitness, while good sleep quality was more often associated with moderate to high physical fitness. The Chi-square test showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and physical fitness (p<0.001) with PR value 0.30 and a 95% CI 0.15 - 0.63, which confirms that good sleep quality is associated with a higher level of physical fitness.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between physical fitness and sleep quality among medical students. Students with better physical fitness tend to have more optimal sleep quality. These findings highlight the importance of regular physical activity as a supporting factor in maintaining sleep quality and physiological well-being among medical students.
