Editorial and Peer Review Process

Jurnal Anestesiologi dan Terapi Intensif (JATI) follows a rigorous editorial and peer review process to ensure the integrity, quality, and relevance of all published content. The entire process is managed through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) online platform, and all editorial decisions are made by human editors on the basis of academic merit.

1. Submission Stage

Authors must submit manuscripts exclusively through the OJS online submission system. At this stage, authors are required to:

  • Complete all metadata fields (title, abstract, keywords, author names and affiliations, and corresponding author details).
  • Upload the main manuscript file together with tables, figures, and any supplementary materials.
  • Provide the required supporting documents and declarations, namely:
    • Ethical clearance: for any research involving human participants or animals, the ethical approval number and year issued by the relevant ethics committee. For studies classified as low or negligible risk, a signed author statement of ethical compliance may be provided instead, subject to approval by the reviewers and/or editors.
    • Conflict of Interest statement.
    • Funding statement (source and grant number, or a declaration that no funding was received).
    • Author Contribution statement.
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) use statement, disclosing whether and how any generative AI tool was used in preparing the manuscript, in accordance with the journal's AI Use Policy.
    • A cover letter.

Submissions that do not meet these requirements may be returned to the authors before processing.

2. Initial Editorial Screening

Upon submission, the Editor-in-Chief or a designated Editorial Manager conducts an initial evaluation to verify:

  • Similarity/plagiarism check using Turnitin or equivalent software. A high similarity index (as a guide, above 20%) may lead to a manuscript being returned or rejected; however, the final judgment rests on editorial assessment of the similarity pattern, not on the percentage alone.
  • Compliance with the journal's scope, author guidelines, and formatting requirements.
  • Completeness of the supporting documents and declarations listed in Stage 1, including the ethical clearance information.

Manuscripts that fail to meet the minimum standards are returned to the authors for correction or may be declined at this stage.

3. Assignment to Section Editor

Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are assigned by the Editor-in-Chief to a Section Editor, who oversees the peer review process for that manuscript.

4. Peer Review Process

JATI applies a double-blind peer review policy, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are kept confidential.

  • Each manuscript is evaluated by at least two independent reviewers with expertise relevant to the subject matter, drawn from institutions other than the authors' where possible.
  • Reviewers assess the manuscript for scientific validity, originality and novelty, methodological soundness, clarity, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal's scope, and provide substantive, constructive comments.
  • Reviewers are expected to submit their assessments, structured review forms, and annotated files within 14 days.
  • Reviewers must preserve the confidentiality of the manuscript and must not use generative AI tools to conduct the review or upload any part of the manuscript into such tools, in accordance with the journal's AI Use Policy.
  • Possible recommendations are: Accept Submission, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, or Reject Submission.

5. Editorial Decision

The Section Editor consolidates the reviewer reports and submits a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief. Based on the reviewers' feedback and independent editorial judgment, the Editor-in-Chief issues one of the following decisions: Accept, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, or Reject. Decisions are communicated to the authors through OJS, accompanied by the detailed reviewer comments and, where applicable, instructions for revision. Editorial decisions are free from undue influence by the publisher, sponsors, or commercial interests.

6. Author Revision

Where revisions are required:

  • Authors resubmit a revised manuscript together with a point-by-point response to the reviewers, within 7 days for minor revisions or 14–21 days for major revisions.
  • Revised manuscripts may be re-evaluated by the original reviewers (major revisions) or assessed by the editor (minor revisions).
  • Failure to resubmit within the specified timeframe may result in withdrawal of the manuscript.

7. Acceptance and Production

Following final acceptance, manuscripts proceed to production:

  • Copyediting: manuscripts are reviewed for grammar, clarity, style, referencing, and adherence to journal standards.
  • Layout editing: the article is formatted into the journal's official style, and the editorial team verifies that the final article contains all required declarations — AI use, author contribution, funding, and conflict of interest — as well as the ethical clearance number and year where applicable.
  • Proofreading: authors receive page proofs via OJS for final approval and are responsible for reviewing and approving them before publication.

8. Publication

  • Each final article is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
  • Articles are published online in the assigned issue. JATI is published three times per year, in April, August, and December.
  • Each article's galley/PDF first page displays the complete bibliographic information: the journal running head (journal name as registered with ISSN, volume, issue, year, and page numbers), DOI, access license, copyright, and history dates (Received, Revised, Accepted, Available Online, and Published).
  • Metadata is deposited for indexing and archiving through Google Scholar, Garuda, Crossref, and other services as applicable (e.g., DOAJ).
  • All articles are published Open Access under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.

9. Post-Publication

  • Authors and readers may report errors or ethical concerns after publication. Where necessary, the journal issues corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions in line with COPE guidelines. Retracted articles are retained on the site and clearly marked as retracted, and the DOI and metadata are updated accordingly.
  • Authors may appeal editorial decisions by submitting a reasoned request to the Editor-in-Chief. Appeals are considered carefully and may involve re-review.

Data Availability

JATI encourages authors to make the data, code, and materials underlying their findings available where possible, subject to ethical approval, patient privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property considerations. Each article should include a data availability statement indicating whether and how the underlying data can be accessed.
